NIJ Updates Ballistic-Resistant Body Armor Standards

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) has introduced the 0101.07 standard for ballistic-resistant body armor, replacing the 0101.06 version that had been in place since 2008. This update separates testing protocols from threat specifications, which are now housed in the companion document NIJ 0123.00. The new system replaces legacy Roman numeral ratings with handgun (HG) and rifle (RF) classifications and includes updated testing for female-fit armor.

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) has officially transitioned to the 0101.07 standard for ballistic-resistant body armor. According to the NIJ, this update addresses contemporary threats and improves testing rigor. A key change is the introduction of NIJ 0123.00, a standalone document that defines ballistic protection levels and test ammunition. By separating these specifications from the core testing methods in 0101.07, the NIJ can update threat profiles more efficiently as ammunition types evolve. The new nomenclature replaces traditional ratings: Level II and IIIA are now HG1 and HG2, while Level III and IV are replaced by RF1, RF2, and RF3. The standard also mandates improved testing for female-fit armor to ensure consistent protection. While the 0101.07 standard is active, the NIJ continues to recognize products certified under the 0101.06 standard, allowing agencies to manage their equipment replacement cycles.
